The Service-Learning subject titled "Storytelling for Understanding: Refugee Children in Hong Kong" concluded with a finale on 2 December 2023 at the PolyU West Kowloon Campus. In attendance were refugee children and their parents, representatives from the Christian Action, staff from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University's Service-Learning and Leadership Office, as well as the head and faculty members of the Division of Languages and Communication (LC) of the College of Professional and Continuing Education (PolyU CPCE).
This unique Service-Learning subject is developed by the LC for undergraduate students of PolyU SPEED. The subject aims to enable undergraduates to use English for in-depth cultural exchanges and to give a voice to refugees, a marginalised community in Hong Kong. After six weeks of classroom instruction and exercises, our students provided 40 hours of face-to-face service to the refugee children. By designing and delivering a series of storytelling workshops, the students bonded with these children and created meaningful personal stories for them. The stories were then recorded and produced as podcasts, capturing the children's voices.
Run for the second time since 2022, the subject has enhanced students' English language abilities, leadership skills, intercultural competence, and civic awareness.
