“Jockey Club Project Well-Being: Place-making in schools” Exhibition, Symposium cum Workshops
2023-01-09
Funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, co-organised by the Hong Kong Association of Careers Masters & Guidance Masters Limited (HKACMGM), College of Professional and Continuing Education of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU CPCE), Po Leung Kuk (PLK), Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (TWGHs) and 15 local primary and secondary schools, the "Jockey Club Project Well-being" has worked with 31 schools in Hong Kong from 2020 to 2022 to create school environments that support well-being through design thinking and participatory design.
School life can be joyful and fulfilling, yet it can sometimes be overwhelming, and a school is like a student’s second home. So make this home a better and happier place, the Place-making team of “Jockey Club Project Well-being” sought the views of 1,000 students and 400 teachers on their needs. Based on their feedback, the project co-designed a range of creative solutions: including a farming garden, well-being hub, kitten cafe, mindfulness corner, enhanced play zones, canteens and other features.
The process entailed a series of design thinking and participatory design workshops hosted by passionate designers and architects who genuinely believe in human-centricity. As a result, students and teachers were empowered to proactively shape their school environment.
“Jockey Club Project Well-Being: Place-making in school” Symposium cum Workshops will be held on 14 January 2023 (Saturday) at the Qube, PMQ to celebrate the results and knowledge gained through the place-making process. During the symposium, topics to be discussed include “What Well-being and Place-making at schools are” and “How design thinking and participatory design help to build the school community”. The project aims to demonstrate a new paradigm of "participatory" school culture that creates a stronger sense of belonging and valuable social bonds.
The symposium will be conducted in Cantonese and in hybrid mode. A link to the live broadcast will be released in due course.
In the afternoon session (14 January), a tasting workshop will be held with our design consultants on design thinking and participatory design to brainstorm and co-create school environments that foster well-being.
A roving exhibition will be held at the same time at the Qube, PMQ open to the public and will include a series of free guided tours.
In February 2023, the project publication “Guide to Place-making” will be distributed to all primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong. The guidebook will be a record of what has been learned over the past two-and-a-half years, sharing the journey, case studies, methodology and core values of place-making. It will help encourage schools to use design thinking and participatory design in their daily practice, make Hong Kong’s school culture more diverse, and enable participatory culture to be more sustainable within schools.
This project serves as a pilot reference for designers, educators and schools in Hong Kong to enhance schools' well-being through place-making.
