Over 5,000 Graduates Conferred PolyU-HKCC or
PolyU-SPEED Awards at the 17th Joint Graduation Ceremony

2019-10-21

Hong Kong Community College (HKCC) and School of Professional Education and Executive Development (SPEED), the educational units of the PolyU-affiliated College of Professional and Continuing Education (CPCE), held their 17th Joint Graduation Ceremony on 19 and 20 October 2019. SPEED and HKCC respectively sent forth 1,184 bachelor’s degree graduates and 3,919 sub-degree graduates who earned their Associate Degree (AD) or Higher Diploma (HD).

HKCC Graduates’ Articulation Rate Reaches 88.4%, with a Record High of 66.6% Admitted to Publicly-funded Programmes

Dr Simon Leung, CPCE Associate Dean (Development) and HKCC Director, said, “According to the HKCC Graduate Survey 2019 which had a response rate of 85.1%, a total of 2,947 graduates articulated to bachelor’s degree programmes, representing a high articulation rate of 88.4%. Among the articulated graduates, a record high of 66.6% (1,962) were admitted to publicly-funded bachelor’s degree programmes. The articulation figures – better than last year’s on all counts – prove that going with HKCC continues to be the premier non-JUPAS pathway for youngsters to gain entry to government-funded bachelor’s degree programmes.”

“From the first cohort of graduates in 2003 to latest ones in 2019, over 28,000 HKCC graduates have articulated to bachelor’s degree studies. This represents a 17-year average articulation rate of 82.2% – performance which bears testimony to HKCC graduates’ abilities,” added Dr Leung.

SPEED’s Quality Articulation Pathways for Sub-degree Graduates

CPCE offers a flexible “2+2” articulation pathway to HKCC graduates who, after successfully completing their 2-year sub-degree study, can articulate to the 2-year honours degree programmes of SPEED.

Dr Jack Lo, SPEED Director, said, “SPEED endeavours to provide quality articulation degree programmes encompassing the areas of applied and media arts, applied sciences, business, engineering and surveying, hospitality and tourism management, humanities and social sciences, and marketing, etc. that are relevant to a range of career and professional aspirations.  In 2020/21, a new programme, BA (Hons) in Chinese Language and Culture, is planned to be offered as part of the new BA (Hons) Scheme in Language and Communication. The Scheme comprises this new programme and two related programmes, namely BA (Hons) in Bilingual Studies with Translation and BA (Hons) in Language and Professional Communication. In addition, a new honours degree programme in the discipline of Design and Innovation Management is also in the pipeline. All these new initiatives will further enrich the programme portfolio of SPEED.”

“In a bid to sharpen the competitive edge of our graduates in the employment market, SPEED has been building close linkage with industry. For example, there are over 50 companies and organisations providing internship opportunities for students through the ‘PolyU SPEED Work-Integrated Education and Summer Placement Programme 2019’, including the Airport Authority Hong Kong, Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited, Hotel ICON, and Hong Kong Disneyland. Besides, new collaborative agreements were signed with China Aircraft Services Limited, CLP Power Academy, Hong Kong International Aviation Academy, PCCW Solutions Limited, Hong Kong Public Relations Professionals’ Association Limited, and Song Saa Private Island in Cambodia. According to the results of SPEED Graduate Employment Survey 2018, over 85% of full-time PolyU-SPEED award graduates were in full-time employment within six months after graduation; and around 5% engaged in full-time further studies. We expect the 2019 cohort of SPEED graduates will continue to enjoy promising employment prospects,” added Dr Lo.

HKCC and SPEED are two complementary self-financed educational units operating under the auspices of CPCE, which was founded by PolyU in 2002. Currently, HKCC offers more than 30 two-year sub-degree programmes spanning the domains of arts, science, social sciences, business and the specialised areas of health studies and design while SPEED provides nearly 30 full-time honours articulation degree programmes for sub-degree graduates to continue their studies so as to earn PolyU-SPEED awards in two years. Some programmes are offered in part-time mode to meet the learning needs of working adults.
