Dr Edward Wen, Associate Division Head of PolyU CPCE’s Division of Languages and Communication (LC), was invited as a Spotlight Speaker at the California Association for Bilingual Education (CABE) 2026 Annual Conference, held in San Francisco from 4–7 March 2026. Attracting more than 3,800 participants—including bilingual educators, policymakers and practitioners—the conference served as a vibrant platform for advancing multilingual education.
In his address, Dr Wen presented his research on the concepts of “Translanguaging Self” and “Translanguaging Mind”. His work offered theoretical and pedagogical insights into multilingual identity construction and cognitive flexibility, sparking strong interest from international scholars and practitioners.
Dr Wen’s participation also paved the way for a joint research project proposal “Translanguaging Across the Two Bays”. Serving as Principal Investigator, Dr Wen will lead the project in partnership with members from CABE, the National Association for Bilingual Education, and senior academics from New Mexico State University and The University of Kansas. This initiative will investigate translanguaging practices, identities and pedagogies across the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area and the California Bay Area, fostering cross-regional dialogue and comparative research.
“It was a great honour to share my work at CABE 2026,” said Dr Wen. “The engagement from fellow scholars and educators reaffirmed the growing global interest in understanding multilingual learners not just as language users, but as dynamic identity constructors and flexible thinkers. I am particularly excited about the ‘Translanguaging Across the Two Bays’ project, which promises to generate fresh insights for both Greater Bay Area and California Bay Area.”
Beyond his academic presentation, Dr Wen was featured on CABE TV, where he shared his career journey and expert insights on translanguaging theory, classroom practices, and implications for bilingual education policy and teacher training.
Dr Wen’s participation at CABE 2026 highlights LC’s commitment to international academic networking, global research collaboration, and leadership in translanguaging and bilingual education research.
