CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (CLP Power) and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU)-affiliated College of professional and Continuing Education (CPCE) today (28 March) signed a Memorandum of Understanding in establishing the partnership in nurturing more talents in electrical engineering to cope with the needs brought about by continuing social development. A newly launched Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Electrical Engineering Programme has started its admission period and, subject to approval from PolyU, the programme is expected to commence in September 2018.

Today’s signing ceremony was held at CLP Power Academy. CLP Power Academy Vice Chancellor Mr Paul Poon and Dean of PolyU-affiliated CPCE Professor Peter Yuen signed the Memorandum of Understanding, witnessed by the Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services Mr Alfred Sit, CLP Power Vice Chairman Mrs Betty Yuen and PolyU President Professor Timothy W. Tong. The agreement paves the way for the first partnership between PolyU School of Professional Education and Executive Development (PolyU SPEED) and CLP Power, a tertiary education institution and a local public utility, in providing the educational opportunities with both academic and vocational training to nurture a new generation of professional electrical engineering talents.

The Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services Mr Alfred Sit said, “The local electrical and mechanical (E&M) industry offers huge potential in career development and there is a keen demand for E&M personnel. We are delighted to witness this partnership between the industry and the education sector in nurturing more talents for the E&M industry.”
Mrs Betty Yuen said that with the development of the Greater Bay Area and the advance of the Belt and Road Initiative, there will be greater cooperation between Hong Kong and countries and territories across the region, and the demand for professionals will increase.
CLP Power Vice Chairman Mrs Betty Yuen says the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Electrical Engineering programme will provide more professionals for the power industry and offer power engineering practitioners opportunities for further studies to help them become engineers.
She said, “CLP Power has been part of Hong Kong’s social and economic fabric for more than a century and places great value on people development and technical skill succession. We established a CLP Training School in 1966, training generations of professionals for the energy industry. The new CLP Power Academy was launched last year and offered the first Professional Diploma in Power Engineering, which was popular and heavily oversubscribed. This new partnership with PolyU SPEED creates synergy by bridging existing professional diploma courses while providing power engineering practitioners for the industry and giving them the opportunity to study further and go on to become professional engineers, establishing an ideal career path.”

Professor Timothy W. Tong, President of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University said, “Many large-scale infrastructure projects are currently in progress in Hong Kong. And with the nation’s Belt and Road Initiative as well as the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Bay Area Initiative, the demand for electrical engineering professionals is growing at a fast pace as a result. On the other hand, many experienced practitioners also wish to further their studies for higher qualifications. The launch of the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Electrical Engineering programme by PolyU SPEED is therefore a timely response to the needs of Hong Kong and the industry. The programme is the first bachelor’s degree programme offered by PolyU SPEED in partnership with a local public utility. The content of the programme, integrated with academic and practical training, is kept abreast of the time. It offers in-depth coverage of electrical engineering, including specific knowledge of power transmission and distribution systems. Students will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience of power equipment at CLP Power Academy and will visit power facilities and work sites. The programme meets the accreditation standards at Qualifications Framework Level 5. Application period for the programme has started, and will continue until 30 June 2018.
