Division of Languages and Communication Talk: Cantonese Romanisation Tool

On 20 March 2025, the Division of Languages and Communication of PolyU CPCE hosted a highly engaging Zoom talk with over 50 participants. The featured speaker, Dr Jon Chui, shared his innovative approach to advancing Cantonese teaching and learning.

Dr Chui, a former international school teacher, introduced Visual Fonts, a groundbreaking tool he developed to annotate Chinese characters using context-sensitive Cantonese romanisation system. He also offered practical tips for using Visual Fonts in research areas such as classifiers, utterance particles, idioms and xiehouyu. Dr Chui’s presentation highlighted the tool’s potential to make significant impact and contribution to the education and research of Cantonese.
