On 10 April 2026, PolyU SPEED held the third inauguration ceremony for the Certificate in Traffic Engineering at the PolyU West Kowloon Campus. Mr Chow Bing-kay, Assistant Commissioner/Urban of the Transport Department, graced the event with his presence and delivered an encouraging speech to the students of the new cohort.

Addressing Growing Demand for Technical Workforce
Dr Jason Chan, MH, JP, Director of PolyU SPEED and Associate Dean (Information and Development) of PolyU CPCE, delivered a welcome speech at the ceremony. He noted that with major engineering projects underway across Hong Kong, and in light of the development of the Northern Metropolis and the Loop, the demand for traffic engineering technical specialist is rising. Dr Chan affirmed the School's commitment to developing more advanced courses to actively support the government's development needs.

Investing in a Tech-Savvy, Future-Ready Workforce

In his speech, Mr Chow expressed his gratitude to PolyU SPEED for its dedication, noting that the student enrolment for the programme has once again reached a new high. He emphasised that the Transport Department places great importance on employee training and will continue to invest resources in this area. Mr Chow encouraged the new participants to master the application of artificial intelligence to assist in their engineering and technical works,  and looked forward to seeing them apply their newly acquired knowledge across different divisions.

The ten-month programme is specifically designed for newly recruited Trainee Technical Officers (Traffic Engineering). Following the highly commended performance of the graduates from the previous cohorts, this new intake continues the mission of equipping students with the practical skills required for tasks in their position, fostering the integration of theory with practice.

The inauguration ceremony was also attended by Dr Anthony Loh, Division Head of the Division of Science, Engineering and Health Studies of PolyU CPCE, together with the course team, instructors; and,  representatives from the Transport Department’s Training & Development Section.  Through this collaboration, PolyU SPEED and the Transport Department aim to cultivate more technical talents in traffic engineering and promote the continuous development of the local transportation system.
