PolyU HKCC was awarded a fund of HK$2,400,000 from EDB Quality Enhancement Support Scheme to implement the project “AI-assisted Self-diagnostic English Language Assessment System (SELA System) for Sub-degree & Degree Students”. This project is fully supported by the Division of Languages and Communication of PolyU CPCE
Unlike traditional assessment platforms, the three-year SELA project introduces an adaptive AI mechanism that generates questions of suitable difficulty level to test-takers, addressing the diverse self-learning needs of local students and ensuring a personalized learning experience for them. SELA evaluates key language skills, including pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, reading and listening. Upon completing the assessments with SELA, students will receive immediate, detailed reports highlighting their strengths and weaknesses in each English skill, along with specific recommendations of relevant resources, such as workshops and online exercises, for English enhancement.
SELA is expected to support up to 6,000 students annually from 2025/26 onwards, and the project team is committed to completing the full development of the SELA system by 2026/27.
