On 5 February 2026, PolyU CPCE’s Division of Languages and Communication welcomed renowned writer and scholar Prof. Zhang Yiwei of Fudan University for a workshop titled “Journey to the World: The Formation and Evolution of the Journey to the West Story Community”. Hosted by Division Lecturer Dr Jane Zhang, the event attracted about 80 participants both on-site and online.
Prof. Zhang captivated the audience with a vivid presentation tracing the origins of Journey to the West and its modern adaptations in film and television, followed by an interactive session where she provided creative guidance inspired by the classic story.
The session not only deepened the participants’ understanding of the narrative traditions surrounding Journey to the West, but also highlighted the dynamic interplay between classical literature and contemporary creative expression. By bridging academic insight with hands-on writing practice, Prof. Zhang inspired students to explore the enduring relevance of literary heritage in today’s cultural landscape.
